EBC “floating” front disc’s installed.

While I was doing the master cylinder mod below and as my front disc’s were worn below spec, I decided to fit some EBC floating discs and new pads, all from Triumph-online. The cost of these funky disc’s plus the new pads was quite a lot less than Triumph want for just the basic non-floating disc’s alone, not including fitting, so a no-brainer I guess, and any further improvement to the front brake is always welcome.
Essentially a straight-forward job – front wheel off, unbolt old discs, bolt new ones on – torque to spec – refit wheel. You’re supposed to use new disc bolts when you change disc’s, but I never have with no ill-effects and I’m not going to start now considering how much Triumph want for new bolts!
While I was at it I discovered that not only had the system not been bled, but my calipers and pistons had not been ‘stripped and cleaned‘ as I had paid Carl Rosners to do at the last service. Cowboys. It’s a real shame as initially I had quite liked Rosners, but it turns out that they are just as shite as most other dealers. That’s the last time I use them. Anyway – I took the opportunity to strip and clean them properly myself this time before fitting the new pads, popping the pistons nearly right out to clean the crud off and lubricate them properly. They are starting to get scored – I will need to replace them at some point in the not-too-distant.
I don’t really know if the floating disc’s perform any better than the normal stock ones. I did the swap at the same time as changing the master cylinder over so I can’t tell really – but overall I’m so delighted with how much better the front brake is now that I don’t really care. The floating discs are supposed to negate the problem of overheating and therefore warped disc’s – but I haven’t suffered from that particular malady yet on this bike anyway so who knows.
